Indonesia and Russia signed an extradition cooperation agreement between countries which was held in Nusa Dua, Bali, Friday (31/3). With this agreement, the two countries have a legal basis to apply for the extradition of perpetrators of crimes from each country.

Russian Minister of Justice Konstantin Anatolievich Chuychenko came directly to Bali, to attend the signing ceremony of the extradition cooperation agreement with the Indonesian Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham), Yasonna H. Laoly.

After the signing ceremony, Yasonna said the extradition agreement was important for Indonesia and Russia because it made it easier for law enforcement officials of the two countries to take action against crimes, especially transnational crimes.

The extradition agreement is a follow-up to the mutual legal assistance cooperation that was agreed by the two countries in 2019. "We have signed a mutual legal assistance agreement in 2019 in Moscow. The legal assistance cooperation is for the criminal sector. The plan is At that time, this agreement was to be signed when President Putin visited Indonesia, but because of COVID-19, that didn't happen. We waited and now is the time," Yasonna explained.

Even though it was only signed at this time, Yasonna explained that the agreement would only take effect when Indonesia ratifies the agreement in a law which the government will then immediately process. This was done so that Indonesia has a legal basis to submit an extradition request or even accept an extradition request from Russia.
